Breastfeeding
reduces diabetes 2 risk for mothers
The
longer a mother breastfeeds her baby the lower are her chances of developing
type 2 diabetes, says a new report. You can read about this new study in the
November issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
9 million American women suffer from diabetes type 2. Diabetes takes up 10% of
all health care expenditure in the USA.
Many studies have found that insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance is
improved during lactation. This new study, unlike the previous ones, directly
examined the link between diabetes 2 risk and lactation.
The study was led by Alison M. Stuebe, M.D., of Brigham and Women's Hospital and
Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.
The team looked at how long mothers breastfed and the development of diabetes
type 2. 83,585 mothers were looked at.
Alison M. Stuebe wrote “In conclusion, increased duration of breastfeeding was
associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes in 2 large cohorts of women.
Together with clinical evidence of improved glucose homeostasis [equilibrium] in
lactating women, these data suggest that lactation may reduce the risk of type 2
diabetes in young and middle-aged women. Further clinical studies are needed to
confirm this finding and to elucidate the physiologic mechanisms for an inverse
association between duration of breastfeeding and risk of type 2 diabetes.”
