Links Between Cancer And Food, Nutrition And Physical Activity - Landmark Cancer Report Announced At Cheltenham Science Festival
World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) is expected to announce today that it will be publishing the most comprehensive report ever written about the links between cancer and food, nutrition and physical activity.
Dr Greg Martin, science and research department manager at WCRF, will tell the Cheltenham Science Festival that the Expert Report will be launched around the world on November 1 with events in London, Washington, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Beijing.
The groundbreaking global report has been put together by 21 leading international experts in fields such as nutrition, cancer biology, and public health. It has been chaired by Sir Michael Marmot, Professor of International Public Health at University College London.
Over the last five years, nine independent teams of scientists from universities and research centres from the UK, the US and Europe have searched through the published evidence. After finding 500,000 studies, they screened them down to 22,000 and then decided that 7,000 met the rigorous standards for inclusion in the report. Their analysis was presented to the panel, who then assessed and judged the evidence before drawing conclusions.
The 21 scientists are now finalising recommendations that people can incorporate into their daily lives to help reduce their cancer risk. The report, which is called Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: A Global Perspective, is the successor to the 1997 WCRF/ AICR Expert Report.
Dr Martin said: "This is really exciting for the science community because it will deepen our understanding of the link between lifestyle and cancer by putting all the published research into a proper context.
"This will also be of great interest to the general public, as people are often not sure about how important or relevant a new study is when they read about it in the papers. But with this report, the leading experts from around the world have looked at all the research and come up with simple recommendations that can make a real difference to people's cancer risk.
"Because of this, they can be confident that when it comes to having the best possible lifestyle for cancer prevention, this will be the most comprehensive report on this subject anywhere in the world."
- The Expert Report will be launched at a press conference at the Royal Society in London on October 31. For more information about attending the conference, call Richard Evans on 020 7343 4253.
- As well as the event in London, there will also be events across the world, including in the US, the Netherlands, Hong Kong and Beijing.
- Following this, there will be a scientific conference at the Royal Society on November 1 and November 2.
