Ziekenhuizen serveren ongezonde voeding.*

Many Top US Hospitals Serve Artery-clogging Foods

It is estimated that trans fat kills about 30,000 Americans each year. And according to today's report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, many of the nation's top hospitals serve food that is prepared with artery-clogging trans-fat - harming patient, staff and visitors. The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the nation's largest, independent medical student organization urges all medical students to work with their hospitals to eliminate trans fats from all dining services and promote healthy nutrition.
AMSA has also launched the Healthy Foods in Hospitals Campaign to improve the food environment within hospitals. Hospitals should promote good health and provide a menu that consists mostly of healthy choices. With many hospitals housing fast food chains on their grounds, there is a lot of room for improvement.
“Hospitals have a responsibility to provide a healthy environment to the communities they serve,” says Leana S. Wen, AMSA's national president. “As medical students, we believe that when hospitals allow unhealthy fast food on their premises, it sends the wrong message to their patients. Hospitals should promote good nutrition and healthy eating options as a way to prevent and treat disease.”
“The medical community must ‘practice what it's preaching,'” says Lenny Lesser, AMSA's Healthy Foods in Hospitals Campaign coordinator. “It is deplorable for a doctor to see a patient and lecture them on taking precautions against heart disease, while there is a McDonald's in hospital lobby serving lunch. The goal of this campaign is to foster healthy nutrition within hospitals.”
